Description

SumUp is hiring a Senior Data Scientist/ML Engineer for its Risk AI Engineering Squad within the Risk & Compliance tribe, building production ML systems that turn machine learning into reliable, explainable transaction-monitoring capabilities. The role spans the full model lifecycle: understanding financial-crime typologies, exploring data, engineering features, training and validating models, deploying them at scale, and monitoring performance over time. The engineer owns end-to-end batch training pipelines, builds reliable software around testing, CI/CD, versioning, deployment, and rollback, and works with risk investigators to translate domain knowledge into detection signals and calibrated thresholds. The role also involves tracking model and operational metrics, monitoring drift, running back-tests, and producing model cards and governance documentation for auditability and regulatory review. The position is based in SumUp's Berlin office under an office-first setup.

Requirements

  • Strong production Python engineering experience, including automated testing, CI/CD, code review, versioning, observability, and operating services or pipelines in production
  • Experience deploying and operating ML models in production, including reproducible training, model versioning, deployment, monitoring, incident response, and rollback
  • Hands-on experience with end-to-end ML pipelines, from data preparation and training through validation and production use, including choosing appropriate KPIs and evaluation metrics
  • Solid data-engineering fundamentals, including working with complex multi-source data ecosystems and caring about data quality, lineage, reproducibility, and failure modes
  • Willingness to deepen data-science expertise in modelling, feature engineering, evaluation, and experimentation
  • Clear, confident communication to align stakeholders, set expectations, surface risks, and turn ambiguous requirements into a technical plan
