Description

DeepL, a global AI language company, is hiring a Japanese Language Specialist within its Research organization, working at the intersection of Research and Product. The linguist will test and evaluate DeepL's products, assess the linguistic quality of human- and machine-generated data, identify machine-translation error patterns, and act as a linguistic consultant to stakeholders across the company. Responsibilities also include designing evaluation tests, guiding and reviewing the freelance linguist network, and investigating user language complaints. The role requires native-level Japanese, English fluency (C1+), a relevant degree, and at least two years of experience in translation, localization, linguistics, or a related field. It is a hybrid position based in Tokyo.

Requirements

  • Deep familiarity with the cultural and professional context of Japanese, ideally a native-level speaker of Japanese
  • English fluency (C1+)
  • Bachelor's degree in linguistics, translation, foreign languages, language teaching, or a related field
  • At least 2 years of experience in translation, localization, linguistics, education, or a related field
  • Ability to break down complex linguistic matters for non-specialists
  • Deep knowledge of reputable linguistic resources for Japanese
  • Expert understanding of research best practices
  • Experience with machine translation and identifying error patterns in machine output
  • Exceptional written and spoken communication skills
