Description

Babbel Labs, an AI-first company within the Babbel group based in Berlin, is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer on a freelance basis to help rebuild how learning content is created, stored and served. This senior individual-contributor role builds and operates services in a serverless-first TypeScript and Node stack on AWS, owning each one from its API contract through to production behaviour under load. You design API and data contracts with type-safe transforms, run and debug what you build, and deliver with coding agents as a matter of course. The engagement is hybrid and Berlin-friendly.

Requirements

  • Strong, hands-on backend engineering in TypeScript and Node as your primary working language, building back-end services rather than build tooling
  • Deep, practical AWS experience in a serverless-first setting using Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB and event streaming
  • Ability to design API and data contracts and model a domain, including type-safe transforms at the boundaries between API, domain and persistence
  • Real production ownership: instrumenting your own services, understanding their failure modes, changing live data safely and working incidents
  • Coding agents as part of your daily workflow, checking their output before relying on it
  • Self-sufficiency in an unfamiliar codebase, working within its grain rather than rewriting what you have not understood
  • Working familiarity with infrastructure as code (Terraform) and CI/CD pipelines, enough to ship and change your own service's delivery
  • Python as a welcome secondary language
